Clarence Martin Haynes, son of William and Lillie May (Johnson) Haynes, was born June 16, 1924 in Mount Airy, North Carolina. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 and enlisted in the Army December 22, 1942 at Camp Croft, South Carolina. He was a Rifleman in Headquarters Platoon, Company E, 134th Infantry Regiment and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 5, 1944. Pvt Clarence M Haynes was killed in action by an artillery shell blast on July 31, 1944 in the vicinity of Torigini Sur Vire, France. He is buried at Oakdale Cemetery, Mount Airy, North Carolina.
