Robert O'Brien Jenkins, son of Edward Sanford and Maude Sinclair (Harris) Jenkins, was born January 25, 1923 in Halifax County, North Carolina. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 and enlisted in the Army January 23, 1943 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served in Company I, 134th Infantry Regiment as a Light Mortar Crew Member and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 6, 1944. He was promoted to Sergeant July 24 and to Staff Sergeant, Squad Leader August 9, 1944. S/Sgt Robert O Jenkins was killed in action by enemy small arms fire November 11, 1944 in the vicinity of Achain, France while directing mortar fire on an enemy pillbox. He is buried at Calvary United Church Cemetery, Littleton, North Carolina.
