Lee Thomas Kelly, son of John Michael and Frieda (Walterspiel) Kelly, was born June 13, 1921 in St Louis, Missouri. He registered for the draft February 15, 1942. At the time he was working at Blanton Creamery in St Louis. He enlisted in the Army September 12, 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri and was a member of the Regimental Headquarters Platoon, Service Company, 134th Infantry Regiment. He landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 6, 1944. On November 16, 1944, he was salvaging equipment with three other soldiers in the vicinity of Bellange, France. While attempting to retrieve this equipment, one of them set off a German landmine, wounding him and killing the 3 other soldiers. After recuperating from his wounds he returned to duty March 21, 1945 when the unit was in the vicinity of Kindt, Germany. He was promoted to T/5 April 29 and to S/Sgt in July 1945. S/Sgt Lee T Kelly returned to the U.S. aboard the Queen Mary, departing Southampton England September 5 and arriving in New York Harbor September 10, 1945. He was discharged from the Army October 23, 1945. Lee T Kelly died April 9, 1979. He is buried at Highland Cemetery, Highland, Illinois.
