George Ivan Kerby, son of David Henry and Clara (Seitz) Kerby, was born June 8, 1918 in Exline, Iowa. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940, entered service April 2, 1942, and served in Battery B, 210th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft) stationed on the Aleutian Islands. He was then reassigned to the ETO and joined Company A, 134th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 83rd Replacement Battalion January 17, 1945 when the unit was in the vicinity of Marvie, Belgium and was promoted to Private First Class on February 14, 1945. Pfc George I Kerby was a member of an eight-man patrol sent to locate enemy positions in Hilfarth, Germany. He was killed in action February 23, 1945 when the patrol received heavy enemy fire and was forced to withdraw. He is buried at Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
