Nelson Joseph Lanning, son of Frederick Charles and Wilhelmine (Michaely) Lanning, was born May 7, 1923 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 when he was 19 years old and working at Williams Bakery in Scranton. He was inducted into the Army February 9, 1943 at Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania and joined Company L, 134th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 38th Replacement Battalion November 14, 1944 when the unit was in the vicinity of Bellange, France. Pfc Nelson J Lanning was killed in action by small arms fire on December 6, 1944 in the vicinity of Sarreguemines, France. He is buried at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Scranton, Pennsylvania.
