Staff Sergeant Nelson E Madden, 39088987, Infantry, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States, near * * * , France, on 8 August 1944. While opposing enemy foot and armored elements in a rear guard action near * * * , the line of Company C, 134th Infantry, was endangered by the approach of an enemy tank. Sergeant Madden, grasping the potential danger of the situation, and aided by another enlisted man, took a position from which, despite his exposure to both friendly and enemy fire, he fired several shots from a rocket-launcher, immobilizing the enemy tank and relieving the company's precarious situation. The courageous act of Sergeant Madden, his initiative and resourcefulness, reflect credit upon his character as a soldier. Entered military service from California.
