Matt Harry Mattson was born January 7, 1920 in Little Fork, Minnesota. He registered for the draft on July 1, 1941. At the time he was living in Duluth, Minnesota and he was employed at Klearfax Rug Company. His draft record lists him as 5' 11" tall, weighing 154 pounds, with blue eyes, blonde hair, and a light complexion. He married Margaret M Nelson on February 5, 1944.

Pfc Matt H Mattson served as a Radio Operator in Headquarters Platoon, Company L, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded in action July 16, 1944 during the battle for St Lo, France. He died of his wounds the following day, July 17, 1944, and he is buried at Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
