Robert Albert Meier, son of Mathew Henry and Anna Marie (Bieker) Meier, was born June 7, 1924 in Marienthal, Kansas. He registered for the draft July 17, 1942 while living in Leoti, Kansas. He was inducted into the Army June 23, 1943, served as a Rifleman in Company F, 134th Infantry Regiment and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 5, 1944. He was wounded by artillery shell shrapnel August 11, 1944 in the vicinity of Mortain, France. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant, Squad Leader August 14 and was awarded a Purple Heart Medal August 23, 1944. S/Sgt Robert A Meier was reported missing September 11, 1944 in the vicinity of Flavigny, France and was later confirmed killed in action by a land mine October 1, 1944 in the vicinity of the Foret De Gremecey, France. He is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint Avold, France.

Staff Sergeant Robert A Meier, 37530918, Infantry, United States Army, for gallantry in action in the * * * sector, France, on 10 August 1944. In an attack against strong enemy positions which had resisted the advance of his battalion for two days, Sergeant Meier, a rifleman, had his rifle shot from his hands and broken. He nevertheless continued his advance and with hand grenades, destroyed two enemy machine gun positions in an enemy-held hedgerow. The gallantry in action, dauntless courage and determination of Sergeant Meier to continue the mission of his company, greatly facilitated the successful accomplishment of the mission of his organization.
