134th Infantry Regiment - Company I

Roy Barton Morriss, son of Albert Pearl and Bonnie Mae (Hall) Morriss, was born April 28, 1926 in Filmore, Missouri. He registered for the draft April 29, 1944 and was inducted into the Army August 16, 1944 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He joined Company I, 134th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 53rd Replacement Battalion January 27, 1945 when the unit was in the vicinity of Heinerscheid, Luxembourg and he was promoted to Private First Class February 15, 1945. Pfc Roy B Morriss was a member of a reconnaissance patrol sent to reconnoiter a crossing of the Rhine-Herne canal about 1/2 mile south of Buer Erle, Germany. While attempting to cross the canal, their boat came under machine gun fire and the patrol was forced to abandon the boat near the far bank. According to another member of the patrol, Pfc Morriss was last seen jumping from the boat. He was originally reported missing and was later confirmed killed in action on April 8, 1945. He is buried at Savannah Cemetery, Savannah, Missouri.
