David Carroll Nance, son of William Alfred and Cora Lee (Carroll) Nance, was born December 3, 1916 in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He married Esther Lee Somers July 24, 1943. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At that time he was living in Reidsville, North Carolina and working at Reidsville Laundry. He was inducted into the Army August 21, 1941 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and trained with the 39th Training Battalion at Camp Croft, South Carolina where he qualified as a Rifle Marksman. He was stationed in Panama for 18 months before being transferred to the ETO in June 1944. He joined Company I, 134th Infantry Regiment as an Automatic Rifleman from the 86th Replacement Battalion July 30, 1944 while the unit was in the vicinity of Conde-sur-Vire, France. Pfc David C Nance was wounded in action August 3, 1944 by an artillery shell blast south of the Vire River in the vicinity of La Metairie, France and died of his wounds 5 days later on August 8, 1944. He is buried at Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville sur Mer, France.
