Robert Irving Ortiz, son of George William and Albertine (Heitsche) Ortiz, was born October 25, 1922 in Cairo, New York. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942. At the time he was living in Orangeburg, New York. He was inducted into the Army December 4, 1942 at New York City and joined Company A, 134th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 86th Replacement Battalion on July 30, 1944 when the unit was in the vicinity of Torigny-sur-Vire, France. Pvt Robert I Ortiz was killed in action August 11, 1944 in the vicinity of Saint-Jean-du-Corail, just southeast of Mortain, France while participating in an attack on a strong enemy position. He is buried at Germonds Cemetery, New City, New York.
