Claude Taylor Panter, son of Elisha Taylor and Gertrude (Bell) Panter was born March 16, 1924 in Culberson, North Carolina. He married Marie Curtis sometime during 1943. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 when he was living in Bell Town, Tennessee. He was inducted into the Army January 14, 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and was an Automatic Rifleman in the Third Platoon, Company F, 134th Infantry Regiment. He landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy July 5, 1944 and fought at St Lo, France. He was promoted to Private First Class July 27, 1944. Pfc Claude T Panter was killed in action August 10, 1944 during the battle for Mortain, France when he crawled forward in an attempt to knock out an enemy machine gun emplacement. Before he reached his objective he was killed by direct fire from an enemy tank. He is buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Copperhill, Tennessee.
