William Albert Rehwinkel, son of Rudolph John and Edith Sophia (Grabowsky) Rehwinkel, was born September 24, 1920 in Kendallville, Indiana. He registered for the draft February 16, 1942. His draft record lists him as a student at the time. He married Margaret Ruth Pfaffman January 15, 1944. He joined the 134th Infantry Regiment sometime between November 1, 1942 and November 1, 1943 and served in the First Platoon, Anti-Tank Company which landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France July 6, 1944. He was wounded in action September 18, 1944 north of Nancy, France but remained on duty. Pfc William A Rehwinkel was killed in action in the vicinity of Marvie, Belgium just south of Bastogne. He was a member of a reconnaissance mission which was seeking suitable locations for the emplacement of anti-tank guns. A concealed enemy tank opened fire and he was killed by machine-gun fire. He is buried at Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville, Indiana.
