James Charles Schirkofsky, son of Fred August and Christina Emilie (Rohweder) Schirkofsky, was born August 28, 1918 in Grand Island, Nebraska. He and his wife Helen June Lewton had a son, James Neal. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he worked for Pacific Fruit Express at the Union Pacific Railroad Yard in Grand Island. He was inducted into the Army February 19, 1941 at Omaha, Nebraska and served as a Squad Leader in the Mortar Platoon, Company M, 134th Infantry Regiment. S/Sgt James C Schirkofsky was killed in action July 30, 1944 in the vicinity of St Lo, France. He is buried at Grand Island Cemetery, Grand Island, Nebraska.
