Merril Lavon Shepherd, son of Warren Paddicks and Samelia (Peterson) Shepherd, was born April 12, 1915 in Indianola, Utah. He married Florence Loraine Lambert September 1, 1937. The couple had a son who died at birth and a daughter, Afton Merrilyn Shepherd. Merril Shepherd registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was living in Salt Lake City, Utah and working at the Hotel Utah. He was inducted into the Army November 2, 1943 at Salt Lake City. He joined Company C, 134th Infantry Regiment from the 38th Replacement Battalion September 30, 1944 and served as a Rifleman. He was wounded in action by shell fragments October 10 near Fossieux, France and returned to duty October 15, 1944. He was promoted to Private First Class November 6, 1944. Pfc Merril L Shepherd was reported missing in action December 12, 1944 in the vicinity of Habkirchen, Germany. It was later confirmed that he had been killed in action. He is buried at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Millcreek, Utah.
