Claud Lee Smith, son of Jess Lee and Lula Catherine (Reep) Smith, was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina. There is conflicting information about his birth date. His enlistment and draft records list January 31, 1924 as his birth date but his headstone shows January 3, 1923. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 and was inducted into the Army September 22, 1942 at Camp Croft, South Carolina. He joined Company F, 134th Infantry Regiment from the 26th Infantry Division December 16, 1944. Pvt Claud L Smith was seriously wounded by artillery shell fragments December 31, 1944 in the vicinity of Sainlez, Belgium and died of his wounds the following day, January 1, 1945. He is buried at Webbs Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Gaston County, North Carolina.
