Harvey Hugo Strobel, son of Johann and Anna Katharina (Rempfer) Strobel, was born June 24, 1916 in Eureka, South Dakota. He attended Northern State Teachers College through his sophomore year and registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was working for Gluckstahl School District No. 2. He was inducted into the Army June 11, 1942 and married Rose Dickhaut in 1943. He joined Company F, 134th Infantry Regiment from the 48th Replacement Battalion August 19, 1944 and served as a Squad Leader. He was wounded in action September 12 but stayed on duty. He reported sick, was dropped from assignment September 17, and returned to duty December 26, 1944. Sgt Harvey H Strobel was originally reported missing and was later confirmed killed in action January 1, 1945, southeast of Bastogne, Belgium. He is buried at Eureka City Cemetery, Eureka, South Dakota.
