Monroe H Bayless, son of Jones Clifton and Nela Alzira (Walling) Bayless, was born May 5, 1923 in Tennessee. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942, was inducted into the Army January 17, 1943 and served in Company G, 137th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944 and was promoted to Staff Sergeant, Squad Leader October 26, 1944. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded a Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action on December 28, 1944 in the vicinity of Surre, Luxembourg. He was granted a 7 day furlough to Riviera France May 30, 1945 and awarded the Good Conduct Medal June 1, 1945. S/Sgt Monroe H Bayless died on June 9, 1945. The place and cause of his death are unknown and his death is recorded as non-battle. He is buried at Walling Cemetery, Van Buren County, Tennessee.

Staff Sergeant Monroe H Bayless, 34526829, Infantry, United States Army, for gallantry in action in the vicinity of * * * , Luxembourg on 28 December 1944. Sergeant Bayless, a squad leader, went forward under heavy enemy shellfire to administer first aid to a seriously wounded comrade. While so engaged he saw an enemy mortar observer and shot and killed him. Sergeant Bayless then carried the wounded man to an aid station. His gallant actions are in accord with military tradition. Entered military service from Tennessee. General Orders No. 49, Headquarters 35th Infantry Division, 25 June 1945 |
