Harry Garthwaite, son of Percy and Agnes Garthwaite, was born January 5, 1914 in Roselle, New Jersey. He registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. His draft record lists him as 5' 8 1/2" tall, weighing 155 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. He was employed by the Police Department of Roselle, New Jersey. Harry Garthwaite was inducted into the Army on January 8, 1941 at Newark, New Jersey. He married Muriel Louise Kemble in 1941 and their daughter Judith was born in January 1944.

1st Lt Harry Garthwaite served in Company G, 137th Infantry Regiment. He was Killed in Action July 14, 1944 in the vicinity of St Lo, France. He is buried at Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
