137th Infantry Regiment, Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion

Melvin Alexander Haddon, son of John Hamilton and Mary Alice (Wilkinson) Haddon, was born July 12, 1925 in Dolton, Illinois. He registered for the draft July 12, 1943. At the time he was working at Acme Steel Company in Riverdale, Illinois. He enlisted in the Army October 22, 1943 and arrived in the ETO in April 1944. He joined Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment as a Field Lineman from the 86th Replacement Battalion July 17, 1944 when the unit was in the vicinity of La Meauffe, France, about 5 miles north of St Lo, and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944. He was wounded in action October 10 by shell fragments in the vicinity of Fossieux, France, returned to duty, and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was promoted to Private First Class October 17, 1944. Pfc Melvin A Haddon was killed in action November 24, 1944 in the vicinity of Diffembach, France. He is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Winchester, Tennessee.
