137th Infantry Regiment, Medical Detachment

Herman Frederick Hines, son of Fred and Marie (Reynolds) Hines, was born March 12, 1916 in Perrysville, Indiana. His family moved to Muskegon, Michigan shortly after his birth. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At that time he was working at Anaconda Wire and Cable in Muskegon. He was inducted into the Army July 7, 1942 at Kalamazoo, Michigan, trained at Camp Barkeley, Texas, served in the Medical Detachment, 137th Infantry Regiment, and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France on July 8, 1944. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for heroic service rendering medical assistance to the wounded in the city of Orleans, France on August 16 and was promoted to Staff Sergeant August 26, 1944. S/Sgt Herman F Hines was killed in action March 31, 1945 in the vicinity of Essen, Germany. He is buried at Mona View Cemetery, Muskegon, Michigan.

Bronze Star Medal Citation

Sergeant Herman F Hines, 36187691, Medical Department, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in the city of * * * , France, 16 August 1944. Sergeant Hines, with two other members of his detachment, drove through the streets known to be covered by enemy machine gun and tank fire, in order to render first aid to wounded French patriots. Having attended the wounded, Sergeant Hines evacuated them to the battalion aid station. Four such trips were made over enemy-held streets, until all wounded had been evacuated. The courage, coolness and devotion to duty on the part of Sergeant Hines in administering aid to the wounded allies, is in accordance with the traditions of the military service. Entered service from Michigan.
