William James Jacques, son of Alfred Joseph and Charlotte Mathilde (Johnson) Jacques was born November 24, 1914 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He married Margaret Hellerud on June 27, 1936 and the couple had 2 daughters, Joanne and Rosalie. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was working at Allis Chalmers in La Crosse. He was inducted into the Army June 24, 1944 and departed for the ETO that November. He joined Company K, 137th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 14th Replacement Battalion December 21, 1944 when the unit was at Neunkirch, France. Pvt William J Jacques was captured and taken prisoner of war January 1, 1945 when he was wounded in the vicinity of Villers-la-Bonne-Eau, Belgium, about 6 miles south of Bastogne. He died of his wounds in a German hospital on January 20, 1945. He is buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
