137th Infantry Regiment, Company I

Hollis Jernigan, son of James Carter and Sallie Jane (Goodwin) Jernigan, was born February 10, 1923 in Putnam County, Tennessee. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 and enlisted in the Army January 13, 1943 at Camp Forrest, Tennessee. He was a member of Company I, 137th Infantry Regiment and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 7, 1944. Pfc Hollis Jernigan was killed in action July 13, 1944 in the vicinity of St Lo, France and was posthumously awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 2, 1944. He is buried at Wittaker Cemetery, Monterey, Tennessee.
