Fred Everett Johnson, son of Wyatt Isaac and Cora May (Conrow) Johnson, was born February 12, 1920 in Picher, Oklahoma. He was inducted into the Army February 3, 1941. He joined Company I, 137th Infantry Regiment as a Squad Leader from the 48th Replacement Battalion August 11, 1944 while the unit was near Mortain, France and was promoted to Staff Sergeant September 1, 1944. S/Sgt Fred E Johnson was killed in action September 23, 1944 in the vicinity of the Champenoux Forest east of Nancy, France. He is buried at Forest Park Cemetery, Joplin Missouri.

Staff Sergeant Fred E Johnson, 37000839, Infantry, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States, in the vicinity of * * * , France, on 20 September 1944. Sergeant Johnson led his squad in an attack against strong enemy positions near * * * . He directed the movement and fire of his troops in a skillful manner, and personally caused numerous casualties among the Germans before he was himself killed by enemy machine gun fire. His bravery and fighting spirit inspired other soldiers in the area to their best efforts, and the enemy was forced to withdraw. Entered military service from Missouri.
