Melvin Johnson was born August 6, 1922 in Lancaster, South Carolina. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 when he was 19 years old and working at Springs Cotton Mill in Lancaster, South Carolina. He was inducted into the Army December 10, 1942 at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina and served as an Automatic Rifleman in Company L, 137th Infantry Regiment. He landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France on July 7 and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944. Pfc Melvin Johnson was killed in action October 13, 1944 in the vicinity of Malaucourt, France. He is buried at Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Lancaster County, South Carolina.
