Raymond Lawrence Johnson, son of Richard Lester and Maude (Truelove) Johnson, was born on June 2, 1921, in Indiana. He married Rieta May Brewer on November 4, 1939, and together they had three children: David Lester, Carol Ann, and Sharon Lee. He registered for the draft on February 15, 1942, at the age of 20, while living in Niles, Michigan, and working at the Kawneer Company, a manufacturing plant in Niles. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on June 23, 1944. After training at Camp Blanding, Florida, he was deployed to the European Theater of Operations (ETO) in November 1944. On December 21, 1944, he joined Company K, 137th Infantry Regiment as a rifleman from the 14th Replacement Battalion, while the unit was near Sarreguemines, France. For his service, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge on January 1, 1945. Pvt Raymond L Johnson was initially reported missing and was later confirmed to have been killed in action on January 5, 1945, near Villers-la-Bonne-Eau, approximately six miles south of Bastogne, Belgium. He is buried at Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg.
