Fred Edward "Eddie" Kauffman, son of George and Anna Juanita (Chaffee) Kauffman, was born June 4, 1913 in Pawnee County, Kansas. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940 while living in Garden City, Kansas and was inducted into the Army February 19, 1941. He served as an Automatic Rifleman in Company K, 137th Infantry Regiment, landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 7, 1944, and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944. Pfc Fred E Kauffman was killed in action by shell fragments October 9, 1944 in the vicinity of Fossieux, France. He is buried at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, Kansas.
