137th Infantry Regiment - Company I

John Joseph Kelleher, Jr son of John Joseph and Selena (Preece) Kelleher, was born October 12, 1921 in Ellensburg, Washington. He registered for the draft February 16, 1942 and was inducted into the Army August 14, 1942 at Tacoma, Washington. He served in Company I, 137th Infantry Regiment and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 7, 1944. He was wounded in action July 12, 1944 by artillery shell fragments in the vicinity of St Lo, France. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 2nd and returned to duty September 6, 1944. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant, Squad Leader September 20, 1944 and was seriously wounded that same day near Nancy, France. He died of his wounds September 23, 1944. S/Sgt John J Kelleher, Jr is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint Avold, France.
