George Koons, son of Mary Amanda (Nichols) Koons, was born April 2, 1923 in Calderwood, Tennessee. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942. At that time he was living in Chilhowee, Tennessee. He was inducted into the Army January 9, 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was a Rifleman in Company G, 137th Infantry Regiment and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France on July 9, 1944. He was killed in action 6 days later by shell blast fragments on July 15, 1944 in the vicinity of St Lo, France and was posthumously awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 2, 1944. Pfc George Koons is buried at Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
