137th Infantry Regiment - Company K

George Edward Lewis, son of Harry Burton and Anna Ethel (Elkins) Lewis, was born May 20, 1918 n St Clair County, Missouri. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940, served as a Rifleman in Company K, 137th Infantry Regiment, and landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy France July 7, 1944. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944. Pfc George E Lewis was reported missing and was later confirmed killed in action August 4, 1944 in the vicinity of the Vire River south of St Lo, France. He is buried at Iconium Cemetery, Iconium, Missouri.

The War Department granted the father's appeal and transferred his eldest son from Germany to an assignment in the U.S.
