Melvin Eric Lind, son of John Arthur and Oma Elfreda (Erickson) Lind, was born November 28, 1916 at Saffordville, Kansas. He married Bonnie Jean Williams and the couple had a daughter, Jo Ann, born February 3, 1944. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940 and was a member of the Kansas National Guard. He enlisted December 3, 1940 and was mobilized to Federal Service December 23, 1940 at Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. He served with Company C, 137th Infantry Regiment and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 7, 1944. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944 and promoted to Sergeant, Squad Leader, December 9, 1944. Sgt Melvin E Lind was initially reported missing January 1, 1945 in the vicinity of Villers-la-Bonne-Eau, Belgium and later confirmed killed in action on that date. He is buried at Hillside Cemetery, Toledo, Kansas.
