137th Infantry Regiment - Company L

John Dominick Mallek, son of Matthew and Joanna Mallek, was born February 21, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. He registered for the draft February 21, 1944 and joined Company L, 137th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 14th Replacement Battalion December 21, 1944 when the unit was in the vicinity of Neukirch, northeast of Saarbrucken, Germany. He was reported missing in action January 1, 1945 in the vicinity of Villers-la-Bonne-Eau, Belgium. Pvt John D Mallek died of wounds February 24, 1945 while being held prisoner by the Germans. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, Illinois.
