Joe Leo Matjeka, son of Edward John and Ida (Meuth) Matjeka, was born June 29, 1917 in Bastrop, Texas. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was living in San Antonio, Texas. He was inducted into the Army in December 1942 and served as a Rifleman in Company K, 137th Infantry Regiment. He landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy France July 7, 1944 and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944. Pfc Joe L Matjeka was reported missing August 4 and was later confirmed killed in action August 8, 1944 in the vicinity of Mortain, France. He is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
