John McPherson, son of John Hugh McPherson and Louise (Cooper) McPherson, was born December 28, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 while employed by the Dodge Apprentice School in Detroit and was inducted into the Army in early 1943. He was a Rifleman in Company K, 137th Infantry Regiment and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 7, 1944. He was wounded in action July 13, 1944 by shrapnel in the vicinity of St Lo, France, returned to duty the following day, was awarded a Purple Heart July 17 and the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944. He was wounded again by shrapnel August 10, 1944 in the vicinity of Mortain, France and returned to duty October 13, 1944 when the unit was in the vicinity of Aboncourt, France. He was promoted to Sergeant, Squad Leader, December 1, 1944. Sgt John McPherson was reported missing December 17, 1944 in the vicinity of Sarreguemines, France and was later confirmed killed in action on that date. He is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint Avold, France.
