Orel Munson, son of Ole and Olga (Olsen) Munson, was born June 16, 1914 in Crawford County, Wisconsin. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940 while living in Ferryville, Wisconsin. He was inducted into the Army June 9, 1941 at Milwaukee, served as a Squad Leader in Company A, 137th Infantry Regiment, and landed at Omaha Beach Normandy France July 7, 1944. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944, promoted to Sergeant August 21 and again promoted to Staff Sergeant September 20, 1944. S/Sgt Orel Munson was killed in action November 11, 1944 in the vicinity of Fonteny, France. He is buried at Utica Lutheran Church Cemetery, Mount Sterling, Wisconsin.
