Robert C Neckermann was inducted into the Army November 13, 1943 at Chicago, Illinois. After training, he departed the U.S. on May 13 and arrived in the ETO May 24, 1944. He joined the 137th Infantry Regiment from the 86th Replacement Battalion July 21, 1944 and served as a Machine Gunner in Company C. At that time, they were in the vicinity of St Lo in Normandy, France. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1 and was promoted to Private First Class August 11, 1944. Pfc Robert C Neckermann suffered multiple shrapnel wounds from an artillery blast in the vicinity of Nancy, France on September 15, 1944. After being treated at the 110th Medical Battalion Clearing Station he was transferred to the 106th Evacuation Hospital. Due to the wounds he received during the battle at Nancy, France, he was medically discharged from the Army December 1, 1945 at the Wakeman Convalescent Hospital, Camp Atterbury, Indiana. In addition to the Combat Infantryman Badge, he was awarded the Purple Heart, American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 Battle Stars, and a Marksman Badge (Rifle, Carbine, Machine Gun, and Pistol).
