Eugene Julian Overby, son of Andrew Nelson and Synneve Johansdatter "Susie" (Barclay) Overby, was born July 15, 1924 in Griggs County, North Dakota. He registered for the draft December 11, 1942, was inducted into the Army February 1944, and joined Company F, 137th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 71st Replacement Battalion October 3, 1944 when the unit was in the vicinity of Gremecey, France. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge November 1, 1944. Pvt Eugene J Overby was killed in action by artillery shell fragments November 8, 1944, in the vicinity of Jallaucourt, France. He is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint Avold, France.
