Walter B Payne, son of Ulysses Blane and Lucile Bernice (Ramsey) Payne, was born in Tennessee on May 27, 1925. He was a Scout in Company I, 137th Infantry Regiment and was wounded in action July 31, 1944 by machine gun fire about 10 miles southeast of St Lo in the vicinity of Torigni-sur-Vire, France. He returned to duty November 21 and was promoted to Private First Class December 9, 1944. Pfc Walter B Payne was originally reported missing and was later confirmed killed in action December 17, 1944 in the vicinity of the Breiter Wald Forest just over the German border near Sarreguemines, France. Originally buried at Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France he was laid to final rest at Knoxville National Cemetery, Knoxville, Tennessee.
