Deward Nathaniel Peery, son of Lackey Nathaniel and Nellie (Williams) Peery, was born April 7, 1919 in Westmoreland, Kansas. He and his wife Elizabeth Jean had a daughter, Donna Marie Peery. He registered for the draft October 16, 1941. At the time he was living in Manhattan, Kansas and working at S and H Bakery. He was Inducted into the Army February 24, 1941 and was a Squad Leader in Company A, 137th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 15, 1944. On September 13, 1944, about 14 miles south of Nancy, France, he suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was transferred to the 106th Evacuation Hospital. He returned to duty November 13, 1944. T/Sgt Deward N Peery was reported missing November 23, 1944. It was later confirmed that he had been captured by the enemy. He died on March 31, 1945 while being held POW at Stalag 3B in Furstenburg, Brandenburg, Germany. He is buried at Aultorest Memorial Park, Ogden, Utah.
