Max Irving Phelps, son of James Emanuel and Mary Kate (Allen) Phelps was born April 19, 1916 in Henry, Tennessee. He married Alice Curtis in 1941. He registered for the draft October 19, 1940. At the time he was living in Hopkinsville, Kentucky and working for the Kentucky State Maintenance Department. He was inducted into the Army January 31, 1942 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana and was originally assigned to the Army mail service in Britain. He joined Company I, 137th Infantry Regiment from the 38th Replacement Battalion, September 16, 1944 and served as a Rifleman. Cpl Max I Phelps was killed in action September 23, 1944 in the vicinity of Champenoux, just northeast of Nancy, France. He is buried at Palestine Cemetery, Palestine, Tennessee.
