Lavelle Elmer Smith was born June 10, 1917 in Atchison, Kansas. He was a member of the National Guard, mobilized to Federal service December 23, 1940 at Emporia, Kansas. He served in Company B, 137th Infantry Regiment, was promoted to Staff Sergeant, Squad Leader and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944. S/Sgt Lavelle E Smith suffered a serious head wound September 12, 1944 in the vicinity of Lorey, south of Nancy France and died of wounds October 21, 1944. He is buried at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, Kansas.
