Ignatius Anthony Sortino, son of Gaetano and Sarah Lorefice Sortino, was born July 18, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois. He registered for the draft February 16, 1942 and was inducted into the Army October 29, 1942. He joined Company B, 137th Infantry Regiment from the 86th Replacement Battalion on July 30, 1944 when the unit was at Torigni-sur-Ville, France. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944. He was wounded in action by a shell blast in the vicinity of Villers-la Bonne-Eau, Luxembourg, lost to the 101st Evac Hospital on January 10, 1945 and returned to duty March 10, 1945 when the unit was in the vicinity of Millingen, Germany. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal June 1 and a Purple Heart June 17, 1945. He returned to the U.S. aboard the SS Cristobal and arrived in Boston Harbor August 31, 1945. Pfc Ignatius A Sortino died July 20, 1999 and is buried at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Alsip IL.
