Private First Class Edward F Spejewski, 35580964, Infantry, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in the St Lo sector, Normandy, France, 11 July 1944. Private Spejewski, a rifleman, was a member of a combat patrol assigned the mission of locating and destroying an enemy machine gun position. When the leader of the patrol was killed and two other soldiers seriously wounded by enemy fire, Private Spejewski attempted to break through the field of fire to secure medical assistance for his wounded comrades, and was himself killed by enemy machine gun fire. His heroic self-sacrifice in placing the welfare of his wounded comrades above his own life, reflects credit upon his character as a soldier, and is in accord with the traditions of the Army. Entered military service from Illinois. General Orders No. 37, Headquarters 35th Infantry Division Association, 27 September 1944 |
