John P Stampfel, son of Joseph and Helen (Zagar) Stampfel, was born in 1921 in Kansas. He was a member of the National Guard, mobilized to Federal Service December 23, 1940 at Kansas City, and served in Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944 and promoted to Private First Class September 1, 1944. He was awarded a Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds he suffered on September 12 in the vicinity of the Moselle River just north of Nancy, France. Pfc John P Stampfel was killed in action in the vicinity of the Gremecey Forest, France by an artillery blast on October 1, 1944. He is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint Avold, France.
