Alton Mittelstadt Swanson, son of John William and Theresa Augusta (Mittelstadt) Swanson, was born July 11 1915 in Lowell, Wisconsin. The family moved to Kansas sometime between 1920 and 1930. He registered for the draft October 17, 1940. At the time he was living in Newton, Kansas. He was inducted into the Army February 20, 1941. He served in Company F, 137th Infantry Regiment and landed on Omaha Beach July 8, 1944. Sgt Alton M. Swanson was killed in action July 13, 1944 by artillery shell fragments during the battle for St Lo, France. He is buried at Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France.
