137th Infantry Regiment - Company I

Clarence Elicha Wheeler, son of Henry Gilbert and Irene (Buckner) Wheeler, was born in Momence, Illinois. Some records list his birth date as December 1 others as December 31, 1909. He married Marjorie Lucille Hupp on March 7, 1934. The couple had 2 children, a son Donald Henry born in 1941 and a daughter Alice Maria born in 1942. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940 and entered military service September 6, 1943. He was stationed at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi and Camp Meade, Maryland before departing for the ETO. He joined Company I, 137th Infantry Regiment from the 38th Replacement Battalion on September 16, 1944 and served as a Rifleman. He was killed in action September 29, 1944 by artillery shell shrapnel in the vicinity of Chateau Salins, Gremecey Forest, France. Pfc Clarence E Wheeler is buried at Union Corners Cemetery, Grant Park, Illinois.
