Athol Dennis Willard, son of William Henry and Julia Elizabeth (Hacker) Willard, was born January 30, 1915 in Preston, Kansas. He was a member of the Kansas National Guard and was inducted into the Army December 23, 1940 at Kingman, Kansas when the 137th Infantry Regiment, as a part of the 35th Infantry Division, was ordered into Federal Service. He arrived in the ETO May 24, 1944 and was billeted in Cornwall, England until landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on July 7, 1944. He served as a Rifleman in Company L, 137th Infantry Regiment. Pfc Athol D Willard was killed in action July 15, 1944 during the battle for St Lo, France. He is buried at Friendship Cemetery, Preston, Kansas.
