Leonard Robert Johnson, son of Gustav Wilhelm and Anna (Nielsen) Johnson, was born May 16, 1920 in Austin, Minnesota and baptized September 3, 1920 at St Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. He married Dorothy Darlene Smalley March 25, 1943 and the couple had a son, Gerald. He registered for the draft July 1, 1941. At the time he was working at Hormel and Company in Austin. He entered service April 23, 1942 and joined B Battery, 161st Field Artillery Battalion from the 15th Replacement Battalion October 11, 1944 when the unit was in the vicinity of Fossieux, France. Pvt Leonard R Johnson was reported missing January 1, 1945 near Honville, Belgium, about 7 miles south of Bastogne and later confirmed killed by shell blast fragments on that date. He is buried at Luxembourg American Cemetery, Hamm Luxembourg.
