Frank Blair VanGundy, son of Frank Blair and Kate Bell (Westerfield) VanGundy, was born December 21, 1918 in Elkhart, Kansas. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was living in Hutchinson, Kansas and working at McDowell Construction Company. He was a member of the Kansas National Guard, mobilized to federal service December 23, 1940 at Hutchinson. He served in Battery A, 219th Field Artillery Battalion. Sgt Frank B VanGundy was killed in action July 11, 1944 during the battle for St Lo, France. He is buried at Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
