320th Infantry Regiment - Medical Detachment

Henry Herman Heimann, son of William August and Matilda (Bauer) Heimann, was born May 13, 1912 in Crystal Lake, Illinois. He registered for the draft October 16. 1940 and was inducted into the Army August 17, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the Medical Detachment, 320th Infantry Regiment and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 7, 1944. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for heroism August 12, 1944 during the battle for Mortain, France. T/4 Henry H Heimann was killed in action by a shell blast September 24, 1944 in the vicinity of Château-Salins, France. He is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint Avold, France.

Technician Fourth Grade Henry H Heimann, 36364532, Medical Detachment, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in the vicinity of * * * , France, 12 August 1944. In the operation against * * * , when Company B, 320th Infantry was assigned the mission of riding tanks into the city, Technician Heimann, an aid man, rode with the troops. When several infantrymen were wounded by artillery, mortar and small arms fire from enemy positions, Technician Heimann jumped from his tank, and, during a short withdrawal, went between the lines to administer first aid to the wounded. Technician Heimann's initiative, courage and devotion to duty reflect credit upon his character as a soldier and upon the Medical Department of the Army. Entered military service from Illinois.
